COMMENCEMENT
A C A D E M I C M AC E
The Mace, which dates back to medieval time when it was used as a weapon, has become
a symbol of authority. Traditionally, colleges or universities design their Mace to symbolize
a theme or message that is central to their mission. The Mace is carried in all formal
academic processions in which the institution’s president participates.
The Mace 昀椀rst appeared in European universities during the fourteenth century and
represented the merger of two much older sta昀昀-like devices of similar length and shape.
These were the regal scepter and the medieval battle Mace.
In the fourteenth century, the royal scepter and the battle Mace were combined to produce
the ceremonial academic Mace. It was carried before royalty, mayors of cities, and chief
o昀케cers of the medieval universities.
The College’s brass seal is set on top of a walnut wood sta昀昀 with engravable bronze rings.

The Medallion is a symbol of the O昀케ce of the President. It is suspended on an
antique brass chain which incorporates the names of the College’s past presidents on
its links. When the current president’s term ends, her name will be inscribed on the
unbroken chain of Baltimore City Community College’s former presidents.
